Discontinued Costco member favorite returns to shelves

There’s a reason so many people liken shopping at Costco to going on a treasure hunt. When you roam the aisles, you never quite know what you’re going to find.

Costco’s own executive team uses the phrase “treasure hunt” frequently. The company intentionally tries to keep its inventory interesting so members are inspired to come back to shop.

But there’s one big downside to the Costco warehouse experience. You never know when a favorite item of yours might disappear.

The only feeling worse than getting to Costco right after the free samples run out is realizing one of your go-to products isn’t where it usually is on the shelf.

For fans of one Kirkland Signature baking staple, that disappointment lasted about two years. Now, there’s good news for folks who love to bake without spending a fortune.

A discontinued Costco favorite is finally back

Costco has brought back its Kirkland Signature Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips after removing the product from warehouses in July 2024.

The return is likely to make plenty of Costco members happy, particularly home bakers who had grown accustomed to the warehouse club‘s private-label chocolate chips.

In fact, recent sightings of the familiar red Kirkland bags have already sparked excitement among Costco shoppers online.

“This is the best news!” one enthusiastic Reddit user wrote after learning that the product is now back in stock.

The 4.5-pound bags are priced at $11.99 to nearly $14, depending on location, marking a notable increase from when they were last available. Fox Business reports that the same item cost just $7.99 back in 2021.

Still, even at the higher price point, Kirkland Signature Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips are a bargain compared to the Nestlé chocolate chips also carried by Costco. Those sell for $16.99 for the same 3.4-pound bag.

Why Costco discontinues products members love

The reason the loss of Kirkland Signature Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips hit so hard is that they offered the combination Costco members commonly seek out — quality and value.

“Kirkland is an extension of the value promise Costco extends to customers,” retail expert Jennifer Bartashus told Retail Wire.

“Kirkland has always been managed as a full-scale brand in its own right, and not as a ‘replacement.’ This attitude makes a difference with how consumers embrace the products.”

But Costco didn’t pull those chips because customers didn’t want the product. Rather, rising cocoa prices made it difficult for Costco to continue selling the item at a price that made sense.

That’s an important part of understanding Costco’s business model.

Costco wants members to believe they’re getting exceptional value. And sometimes, that means pulling a product when costs rise too much, instead of simply passing the entire increase along to shoppers.

The result, however, can be frustrating for members.

Costco’s rotating inventory is part of what makes shopping there interesting, but it also means a product you’ve relied on for years can suddenly vanish.

Still, it’s a trade-off Costco members are clearly willing to accept.

The company boasted a 92.2% renewal rate for U.S. and Canadian memberships during its most recent quarter, which means shoppers are able to look past the disappointment of discontinued products and focus on the bigger picture.
