Ralph Lauren shoppers are at the center of its next big move

Most shoppers never read the proxy statements their favorite brands file with federal regulators. Those documents can run more than 100 pages. They reveal exactly what executives are paid to do and the targets they must hit to earn their bonuses.

A pattern is showing up in those filings this year. The sustainability metrics that executives once earned bonuses for are being replaced by targets tied to artificial intelligence. The shift is happening at companies across retail and beyond.

Ralph Lauren (RL) made that change in fiscal 2026. The company dropped ESG goals from its executive bonus plan after four years and added AI targets in their place. For shoppers, that decision points directly to what is coming next from the brand.

What Ralph Lauren changed in its executive pay plan

Ralph Lauren’s fiscal 2026 short-term incentive plan tied executive pay to goals focused on “AI literacy and enablement.” The disclosure appeared in a proxy statement filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission in June. The document ran 131 pages.

The AI metrics contributed to maximum payouts for top executives in fiscal 2026, as disclosed in the company’s proxy statement. AI goals were listed in the bonus structure alongside sales growth and operating costs.

A company spokesperson told Reuters that the change reinforces opportunities to use AI to improve work across the business.

Ralph Lauren also said its sustainability work has matured and is now embedded throughout its operations. The company said a standalone bonus target is no longer needed to drive those efforts.

Compensation advisors say AI targets are hard to define right now. The concern is that companies may not be measuring anything specific. A bonus tied to AI adoption does not automatically measure whether that adoption changed business results. Advisors say the metric needs to be connected to output, not just activity.

Ask Ralph: the tool Ralph Lauren shoppers will feel first

The pay shift reflects work Ralph Lauren has already done on the customer side. Last year, the fashion retailer launched a shopping assistant called Ask Ralph with Microsoft, built on Azure OpenAI technology.

Shoppers open the Ralph Lauren app, type a style question and get outfit recommendations pulled from current inventory.

The tool handles open-ended questions like “what should I wear to a concert.” It returns full outfit suggestions with images and links to individual pieces. Recommendations get more specific as a shopper asks follow-up questions. The company says the tool becomes more personalized with each use.

Ask Ralph is currently available to U.S. shoppers through the Ralph Lauren app on iOS and Android. It covers Polo Ralph Lauren men’s and women’s collections. The company has not said when it plans to expand the tool further.

Ralph Lauren also appointed a new global chief digital officer in May 2025, with AI named as a stated focus of the role.

Executives who earn bonuses for hitting AI targets have a financial reason to push tools like Ask Ralph into more hands. That includes tracking whether the assistant leads shoppers to complete a purchase.

Why tying pay to AI is still rare in retail

Target (TGT) named its first chief AI officer in August 2026. A title change puts someone in charge of an AI strategy. A bonus target puts money behind it. The two are different levels of commitment.

More Retail:

About 12% of S&P 500 companies linked executive pay to AI goals this year, up from 5% in 2024, according to data from the Conference Board and ESGUAGE reported by Reuters.

Compensation firm Pearl Meyer reviewed 2,500 proxy statements filed this year. It found that only 2% of public companies had built AI into executive pay structures.

Consumer companies lag sectors such as communications and finance on this measure. Ralph Lauren is an outlier in retail right now. The broader industry has not moved in the same direction yet.

What both investors and shoppers should watch

Ralph Lauren posted strong revenue growth in its first-quarter 2027 results.

The retailer noted that younger shoppers in Asia and North America have been buying more of its higher-end collections.

AI tools that make product discovery easier could help the brand pull in more of these buyers and keep them coming back.

The ESG-to-AI shift in the bonus plan also reflects how quickly investor priorities have moved. Sustainability metrics were a standard fixture of executive pay packages for years. Boards are now recalibrating toward technology, efficiency and returns on capital spending.

The test is whether the AI spending shows up in the numbers. Higher margins, better inventory management and stronger customer conversion would indicate the executive targets are working.

Future proxy statements will show whether Ralph Lauren maintains AI in its pay plan and how it measures success.
