United Airlines cuts 10 routes, offers refunds

The third-busiest airport in the United States, O’Hare International (ORD) in Chicago serves as a major hub for the Midwest and those traveling through to smaller cities in the region from all over the world.

Over 40.6 million travelers passed through O’Hare in 2025 while the airport is also a hub for both United Airlines and American Airlines.

At the start of July, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) extended its flight caps on launching new routes that were set to expire on Oct. 24, 2026 until October 2027 as a way to minimize crowding and disruption during construction. The total number of flights permitted to depart O’Hare on a given day will stay at 2,708 for now.

United Airlines cancels plans to launch 10 flights to smaller Midwestern cities

As a result, United Airlines followed the decision by announcing that it will scrap plans to launch new flights to 10 smaller Midwestern cities that it announced earlier in the year.

The cuts include routes to Bloomington and Champaign in India, Kalamazoo and Marquette in Michigan and La Crosse and Wausau in Wisconsin as well as Tri-Cities Airport in Tennessee, Erie, Pennsylvania, and Rochester, Minnesota.

A spokesperson said that United is hoping to finally launch these routes once the flight caps are lifted but is removing them from its flying schedule for now. The flight caps reduces all traffic out of O’Hare throughout 2027 by 10%.

United “working with impacted customers to find alternative travel options”

“Following the extension of FAA’s Chicago O’Hare’s flight schedule cap through October 2027, we are delaying the start of ten new routes announced earlier this year and removing them from our schedule,” the statement reads. “[…] We remain committed to providing important connectivity to these cities and hope to start service from Chicago once the FAA order expires.”

More Travel News:

As United had already started advertising the new routes on its website, travelers who already booked flights for later in 2026 will be contacted by the airline to “find alternative travel options or provide refunds.” Travelers with a canceled flight are entitled to ask for a full refund to the original method of payment instead of accepting the offer of a flight credit or rebooking on a route to another city.

These routes were part of United’s plans to enter new markets; as a result of the flight caps, most of these regional airports will continue to be served by mostly low-cost carriers.

A budget proposal filed under the U.S. Department of Transportation’s annual report shows that Donald Trump’s administration is also weighing significant reductions in funding to the Essential Air Service program that subsidizes flights to rural areas and smaller cities that would otherwise not be lucrative for mainstream airlines.

The proposed cuts would nearly halve the funding to provide air service to isolated communities that depend on it from $633.5 million per year to $372 million. Congress has until Sept. 30 to pass the funding bill before having to go into shutdown; the Republican push to cut many essential services to redirect billions to immigration enforcement and military spending have led to two government shutdowns so far in 2026.
