Delta Air Lines to exit entire market until March 2027

At the end of 2025, Delta Air Lines announced plans to launch a flashy and unconventional route for a U.S. carrier by October of the following year: the new flight between Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) in Atlanta and Riyadh King Khalid International Airport (RUH) will be the first direct service to Saudi Arabia for any U.S. airline.

The decision to expand into the Middle Eastern nation came amid rising tourism numbers and the latter country’s efforts to grow its tourism industry to rival that of nearby Dubai in the United Arab Emirates as well as open up from past reputations of being a closed-off country.

Almost all of that was completely upheaved when the joint U.S.-Israeli strike on Iran in February 2026 threw the entire Middle Eastern region into turmoil that continues to spill over far beyond the site of the original attack.

Delta Air Lines confirms delay of much-hyped Atlanta-Riyadh flight

In the most recent escalation, a series of cruise missile strikes that the islamist paramilitary Houthi group launched on Saudi Arabia’s main airport on Oct. 10 killed 13 travelers while injuring hundreds of others.

With the ongoing risk of follow-up strikes on the airport remaining high (a second strike on Oct. 13 killed one and injured 11), most international airlines have suspended any flights into Riyadh until at least November while in some cases pushing the restart of service back into 2027.

While European carriers like KLM are still hoping to resume their own service into Riyadh by November, Delta Air Lines has now confirmed that it is pushing back the launch of its Atlanta-Riyadh route until March 2027.

The closure of King Khalid International to flights has also recently been extended until Oct. 17.

“Delta will delay the planned launch of its nonstop service between Atlanta and Riyadh”

“Delta will delay the planned launch of its nonstop service between Atlanta and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, amid evolving developments in the region,” the airline said in its statement. “The safety and security of our customers and employees always come first and continue to guide our operational decisions. We remain in close contact with relevant government and aviation partners, including Saudia and Riyadh Air, as we monitor the situation.”

More Travel News:

The suspension is surely a disappointment to both passengers who already booked travel on it and the airline itself, given how much it hyped it up in the months prior to the original launch date.

Passengers who already booked travel on the Atlanta-Riyadh route will receive communication from the airline about options for moving the flight to another date or getting a refund.

Delta confirmed that travelers whose fare class otherwise would otherwise not allow for it will be able to receive a refund to their original method of payment.

“Saudi Arabia remains an important market for Delta, and we are committed to serving the Kingdom for the long-term,” Delta said further of the route suspension. “We look forward to connecting Saudi Arabia to Delta’s global network in March 2027.”
