AMD Stock Crosses $1 Trillion at $615 on Meta’s Muse…

Updated 22 September 2026, before the US open

AMD: $615.52 at the 21 September close, up 10% on the day (stockanalysis.com, GuruFocus). Intraday high $615.99. Market capitalisation just over $1 trillion – the first close above that line in the company’s history.

Verdict: the fundamentals behind the move are real, but the stock has now caught up with Wall Street. At $615.52 AMD sits almost exactly on the $616.51 average analyst target, so the next leg needs analysts to raise numbers, not just the market to keep believing them. Bull $780, bear $500.

Key facts

  • $1 trillion club: AMD closed above a $1 trillion market value for the first time on Monday 21 September, after touching $615.99 intraday (Yahoo Finance, GuruFocus).
  • The trigger: Meta’s consumer AI agent Muse reached No. 1 on Apple’s US App Store, and traders read that as evidence that AI inference will need far more CPUs alongside GPUs (Yahoo Finance).
  • Pricing power: TrendForce reported that AMD has told customers to expect price increases of about 10% on AI accelerators, graphics chips and chipsets from the fourth quarter, citing higher TSMC costs (via Yahoo Finance).
  • The whole sector moved: the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose 4.3%, the Nasdaq-100 2.8% and the S&P 500 1.5% (GuruFocus). Intel and Arm both rose by double digits; Nvidia gained about 2.3%.
  • Earnings momentum: Q2 revenue was $11.54 billion, up 50% year on year, with data centre revenue of $6.72 billion, up 107% and 58% of the total. Q3 guidance is about $13 billion, plus or minus $300 million (24/7 Wall St).
  • Analyst consensus: 55 analysts, “Strong Buy”, average target $616.51, range $365 to $1,250 (stockanalysis.com).

Why Meta’s Muse moved AMD more than Nvidia

The reaction on Monday was a rotation inside AI hardware, not a blanket bid. AMD rose 10%, Intel and Arm posted double-digit gains, and Nvidia added only about 2.3%. The market’s reading of Muse is that consumer AI agents – software that handles live user requests all day – are CPU-heavy workloads. Every agent session runs on general-purpose processors orchestrating the GPU work, and AMD is the only company selling both at scale into data centres.

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan added fuel to that view, saying CPU demand is so high that Intel can supply only 50% of customers (as quoted by Yahoo Finance). When one supplier is rationing, the other has room to raise prices, which is exactly what the TrendForce report says AMD is doing. A 10% list-price increase on accelerators and GPUs, if it sticks, drops largely straight to gross margin, which was already about 56% non-GAAP in Q2.

The Meta link runs deeper than one app. In February 2026 AMD issued Meta a warrant for up to 160 million shares at $0.01, on the same terms as the warrant OpenAI received in October 2025 (AMD Form 8-K, 6 October 2025). Both are tied to purchase commitments of up to six gigawatts of AMD Instinct GPUs.

The $600 threshold, and what it does not do

AMD’s warrant agreements with OpenAI and Meta include stock-price conditions that escalate to $600 per share for the final tranche. Crossing $600 on Monday satisfies that price hurdle, but it does not by itself hand either company any shares. Vesting also requires the GPU deployments to happen – the first tranche after the initial one gigawatt of MI450 deliveries, full vesting only at six gigawatts (AMD 8-K). Investors should treat the $600 level as a signal of how far ahead of plan the share price is, not as an immediate dilution event. We set out the dilution math in our 19 September AMD scenario analysis, written when the stock was at $559.82.

Valuation: where the stock now sits

On consensus estimates compiled by stockanalysis.com, AMD is expected to earn $7.58 per share in 2026 and $15.57 in 2027, on revenue of $50.88 billion and $88.08 billion. At $615.52, the stock trades at about 81 times 2026 earnings and about 40 times 2027 earnings. The forward multiple is not extreme for a company guiding to more than double data centre revenue in 2027, but it assumes that doubling happens on schedule.

The more immediate issue is the targets. Most recent broker notes cluster close to the current price: Bernstein’s Stacy Rasgon at $650 (14 September), Stifel’s Ruben Roy at $635, Bank of America’s Vivek Arya at $620, Piper Sandler’s David O’Connor at $600 and Truist’s William Stein at $594 (stockanalysis.com). Two of those five are now below the share price. Expect a round of target increases this week; if they do not come, the stock has run ahead of its own analyst base.

Supply is the other constraint. AMD’s customers, including the hyperscalers, depend on TSMC capacity, and the same cost increases behind AMD’s price rise are visible across the chain – see our TSM stock analysis for the foundry side of the trade.

Quick Take

AMD at $615.52 has earned its trillion-dollar tag on numbers – 107% data centre growth, a $13 billion Q3 guide and the pricing power to lift list prices 10%. What changed on Monday was not the fundamentals but the market’s view of who benefits from AI agents, and that rotation took AMD straight to the average analyst target. From here the stock needs estimate upgrades, not just enthusiasm. A pullback toward the $560 pre-rally level would not break the story; a Q3 miss against the $13 billion guide would.

The risks

  • Valuation: at about 81 times this year’s expected earnings, the stock is priced for execution, and a one-day 10% move leaves little margin for a soft quarter.
  • Export controls: U.S. restrictions on advanced chip sales to China remain a recurring risk to AMD’s accelerator business (24/7 Wall St).
  • Gaming weakness: the gaming segment fell 31% year on year in Q2 (24/7 Wall St), and a 10% GPU price increase does not help consumer demand.
  • Sector concentration: AI hardware stocks trade together, and a wobble in hyperscaler spending would hit AMD alongside the rest of the group – the pattern described in our piece on the $700 billion AI capex trade.

Frequently asked questions

Is AMD worth $1 trillion now?

Yes. AMD closed at $615.52 on 21 September 2026, up 10%, for a market capitalisation just above $1 trillion – its first close above that level.

Why did AMD stock jump 10%?

Meta’s Muse AI agent reached No. 1 on Apple’s US App Store, and traders bet that AI agents will need far more CPUs, where AMD is a major supplier. A TrendForce report that AMD is raising prices about 10% on accelerators, GPUs and chipsets from Q4 added to the move.

What is the AMD analyst price target?

The average of 55 analysts is $616.51, almost exactly the current price, with a range of $365 to $1,250 (stockanalysis.com). Recent targets include Bernstein $650, Stifel $635 and Bank of America $620.

Does AMD crossing $600 mean OpenAI and Meta get their warrant shares?

Not by itself. The $600 price is the final stock-price hurdle in both warrants, but vesting also depends on GPU purchase milestones up to six gigawatts, according to AMD’s filings.

Is AMD stock overvalued?

It trades at about 81 times 2026 consensus earnings and about 40 times 2027. That is expensive on this year’s numbers and more reasonable on next year’s, if 2027 earnings roughly double as analysts expect.

What would push AMD to $780?

Sustained CPU shortages from agentic AI demand, on-schedule MI450 deployments for OpenAI and Meta, and upward revisions to 2027 earnings estimates. $780 is about 50 times current 2027 consensus EPS.

What is the downside risk for AMD stock?

Our bear case is $500, about 19% below the close, based on roughly 32 times 2027 earnings if price increases fail to stick or the Q3 report disappoints.
