Loop Capital points to a stock that can bring serious gains

Jersey Mike’s (JMKE) capped its first month as a public company with a brief upward run that has since faded.

The stock climbed as much as 8.8% over the past month before giving back those gains, and shares now trade back near the $23 IPO price.

Then Loop Capital stepped in with a call that stood out from the rest of Wall Street.

The firm started coverage of Jersey Mike’s Subs with a Buy rating and a $40 price target.

That target is the highest on Wall Street by a wide margin. Most other firms that started coverage landed under $30.

For investors, a call like this raises a fair question. Is a sandwich chain really a growth stock, or is Loop Capital reaching too far?

The answer depends on three things: the company’s model, its sales record, and the price you pay today.

Why Loop Capital thinks Jersey Mike’s stock can run

The analyst behind the call is Alton Stump.

A managing director at Loop Capital, Stump has covered consumer and restaurant names for decades, including McDonald’s, Domino’s, and Shake Shack.

His firm also helped manage Jersey Mike’s initial public offering, which went out in late July 2026 at $23 a share, CNBC reported.

Stump’s core argument rests on how Jersey Mike’s makes its sandwiches.

Workers slice meats and cheeses fresh, to order, in full view of each customer.

Loop Capital says this is the single biggest reason for the chain’s success.

The firm also argues that rivals struggle to copy it, because keeping that slicing line fast during a lunch rush is genuinely hard to pull off at thousands of stores.

More Restaurant Coverage:

Sales back up the story so far.

Jersey Mike’s has grown same-store sales by an average of 6% a year over the past two decades.

Then the business sped up to a compound annual growth rate of about 8.5% from 2020 through 2025, according to CNBC.

That is unusual in a year when many restaurant chains have watched customers cut back, a trend visible in Sweetgreen’s recent sales slide.

How the marketing shift could lift sales

The next part of the bull case comes from advertising.

Jersey Mike’s plans to move 20% of its total ad budget into digital channels over the next 12 to 18 months, Stump noted.

Local franchise owners expect that push to drive more orders fairly quickly.

More targeted app and social ads tend to bring in more visits, and more visits lift sales at stores that are already busy.

Here is why that matters for the stock.

What Loop Capital wants to see over the next year

  • Same-store sales staying above the industry average
  • The digital ad shift lifting order volumes, not just brand awareness
  • Steady new store openings without existing locations stealing each other’s customers

If those pieces come together, Stump believes comparable sales can speed up again.

Why the Jersey Mike’s business model appeals to Wall Street

Jersey Mike’s owns very few restaurants itself.

Out of more than 3,300 locations, franchise owners run nearly all of them, according to Chain Store Age.

Those owners take on the rent, the staff, and the daily operating costs. Jersey Mike’s mostly collects steady royalty fees on top.

That setup tends to produce reliable cash flow and shields the corporate parent from swings in food and labor prices.

It also explains why the initial cool reception did not scare off Wall Street.

The wave of Buy ratings behind the stock

Loop Capital was not alone. When the post-IPO quiet period ended, a large group of firms weighed in at once.

On Aug. 24, 13 brokerages started coverage of Jersey Mike’s, and 12 of them issued Buy or Buy-equivalent ratings, TipRanks reported.

Only Wells Fargo held back, with a Hold and a $25 target.

That gives the stock a consensus Strong Buy rating, with an average target near $27.89.

Broad support like this often adds trading liquidity and can steady a young stock.

It also reassures retail investors who watched shares dip below the $23 IPO price on opening day.

How Jersey Mike’s stock compares to the S&P 500

Here’s how the stock has actually traded next to the broader market.

Jersey Mike’s opened at $21 on its debut day and closed that session at $21.63, down 6% from its $23 offer price.

From that low, shares climbed to a brief intraday high of $24.99 in the stock’s second week. That high was fleeting and did not hold.

Jersey Mike’s (JMKE) vs. the S&P 500, recent stretch

  • Past 5 days: JMKE up about 4.5%, while the S&P 500 traded near record highs
  • Past month: JMKE up about 8.8% off a temporary dip
  • Through most of August: Shares have closed within a few percentage points of the $23 offer price, with no sustained move above it

On a closing-price basis, JMKE has mostly traded sideways since its debut, consolidating near its IPO price rather than building a steady uptrend.

That kind of uptrend is what would confirm Loop Capital’s call is already playing out.

The valuation risk investors should weigh

Investors should be aware that there’s a catch. Jersey Mike’s is priced like a fast-growing tech company, not a sandwich shop.

Its trailing price-to-earnings ratio sits well above 100, a level that leaves almost no room for mistakes.

To grow into that price, the chain has to expand smoothly from about 3,300 stores toward a long-term domestic goal of roughly 7,500, according to TechTimes.

If openings slow, or new stores pull customers away from nearby ones, the stock’s rich multiple could shrink fast and drag shares down with it.

There is also the ownership question. Blackstone (BX) bought Jersey Mike’s in late 2024 and still holds a controlling stake.

If the private equity firm sells large blocks of stock down the road, that added supply could limit near-term gains.

What this means for your next move

For readers considering the stock, Loop Capital’s $40 target is a genuine bull case, not a guarantee.

The gap between it and the $27.89 consensus tells you how much disagreement still exists.

A practical way to approach JMKE

  • Treat it as a growth bet, and size the position accordingly.
  • Watch the first few earnings reports for proof that same-store sales are holding up.
  • Keep an eye on any Blackstone share sales, since those can cap gains.

Jersey Mike’s has a strong brand and a sales record most chains would envy. The stock still has to earn the premium price attached to it.

Whether Jersey Mike’s rewards new shareholders comes down to execution. The brand is proven. The price is not yet.
