Why Apple shares are down on Tuesday?

Apple AAPL shares fell in premarket trading Tuesday as investors assessed a fresh round of analyst concerns about the company’s iPhone business, adding pressure to the stock after its recent advance.

The stock declined 1.08% before the opening bell, following a 0.15% loss on Monday. The pullback comes after Apple’s market capitalization reclaimed $5 trillion last week, making the latest reassessment of its outlook particularly significant for investors.

Technology shares broadly struggled for direction, with semiconductor companies including Micron Technology, Intel and AMD facing renewed selling pressure ahead of the opening bell. Concerns over the sustainability of AI-related spending and rising financing costs have weighed on the sector, leaving Apple without much support from the wider market.

Loop Capital downgrades Apple on demand concerns

Loop Capital downgraded Apple to Hold from Buy on Tuesday and cut its price target to $330 from $370.

The firm had previously expected Apple to compensate for lower shipments in the September and December quarters. It now believes the problem may extend beyond supply constraints, with weaker-than-expected consumer demand emerging as a concern.

Loop Capital also flagged the possibility of pressure on Apple’s gross margins as memory costs rise. It said the stock may need a fresh fundamental catalyst to add to its recent gains.

The revised assessment comes as investors look for evidence that demand for Apple’s premium devices can remain resilient despite higher prices and increasing component costs.

iPhone upgrade plans under scrutiny

A survey by KeyBanc pointed to softer consumer intentions to upgrade iPhones over the coming year, despite stronger initial interest in the iPhone 18 compared with its predecessor.

KeyBanc analyst Brandon Nispel said consumers were becoming less inclined to replace their devices as prices increased and existing phones continued to meet their needs.

A shift toward more expensive models could nevertheless support Apple’s average selling price, potentially cushioning the effect of slower unit growth. The balance between premium-device demand and the number of phones sold will remain important for the company’s revenue and profitability.

Interest in Apple’s anticipated foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, also appears stronger than actual purchase intentions, suggesting that consumer curiosity about a new product does not necessarily translate into firm buying commitments.

Apple Pay faces regulatory pressure in Britain

Separately, Britain’s competition regulator is seeking to loosen Apple’s control over contactless payments in the country.

The proposed measures would remove technical barriers and lower fees, potentially making it easier for competing payment services to challenge Apple Pay.

The regulatory development presents another issue for Apple as it manages its services business alongside concerns about demand for its flagship devices.

Apple expands US manufacturing commitments

Apple has also committed to purchasing up to $100 million worth of titanium over three years from a Pennsylvania-based company as part of its efforts to expand manufacturing in the United States.

The commitment follows the launch of Apple’s American manufacturing program in 2025, which forms part of a broader $600 billion investment commitment over four years.

For investors, Apple’s immediate challenge is balancing its recent market gains against questions about iPhone demand, rising component expenses and the need for new growth drivers.

The company’s manufacturing commitments and expansion into new product categories provide additional developments to watch, but analysts are increasingly focused on whether its core smartphone business can sustain its momentum.
