SpaceX shares jump premarket: how Q3 results are good news for AI cloud providers

SpaceX SPCX shares jumped nearly 8% in premarket trading after the company delivered a blockbuster third-quarter performance, offering a fresh source of optimism for investors rattled by mounting concerns over the profitability of artificial intelligence infrastructure providers.

Elon Musk’s aerospace and AI company reported a 161% year-over-year increase in revenue to $14.58 billion for the third quarter, comfortably exceeding analysts’ expectations of $12.72 billion, according to LSEG data.

Net profit reached $4.4 billion, compared with a net loss of $1.05 billion in the same period last year, while operating income stood at $2.8 billion.

SpaceX’s AI business takes lead

The biggest contributor to SpaceX’s revenue outperformance was its AI, now called Super Intelligence, division, which recorded revenue of $7.6 billion, up 830% from a year earlier.

The segment surpassed Starlink’s connectivity business for the first time, having generated $813 million in the year-earlier quarter.

Starlink also delivered substantial growth, with revenue increasing 69% to $5.2 billion as its subscriber base reached 13.6 million.

SpaceX’s AI business generates revenue primarily through contracts for data-center computing capacity rather than through its own AI models.

The company rents computing resources to developers including Anthropic, Google and Reflection AI.

The latest results offer evidence that demand for AI computing can translate into significant revenue, providing a counterpoint to concerns that the industry’s infrastructure expansion may be running ahead of its commercial returns.

Neocloud investors look for signs of profitability

“SpaceX delivered the quarter the bulls wanted, at least on the top line,” Will Rhind, CEO of asset manager GraniteShares, told Reuters.

“The story now is all about AI. The compute contracts signed earlier this year are turning into revenue faster than a lot of people thought,” Rhind said.

SpaceX’s performance arrives as investors reassess the outlook for AI infrastructure companies following a difficult period for the sector.

A Gartner report warning that 80% of independent providers could face extinction by 2030 had added to concerns about the industry’s competitive landscape.

Investors have also become more sensitive to the financing requirements of companies expanding their data-center capacity through debt.

CoreWeave, a major provider of AI computing infrastructure, has faced pressure in its bond market, with rising yields reflecting concerns about its debt burden and the pace at which its investment can generate returns. Its stock has fallen over 27% in the past month.

Bull case loading for AI cloud providers?

Against that backdrop, SpaceX’s latest earnings could provide investors with a useful reference point as they assess whether large computing contracts can support the economics of the AI infrastructure business.

Truist Securities analysts said in a Tuesday note, cited by CNBC, that SpaceX Q3 numbers can help AI cloud providers.

“Despite market concerns relating to financing for AI cloud providers this past week, we believe SpaceX’s third-quarter 2026 represents the first data point during the earnings season to support the bull case for AI cloud providers,” they said.

The analysts said that the demand appears “insatiable,” and added that Coreweave and Nebius are set to benefit and capture demand as “pricing power will more than offset higher rates.”
