Walmart exclusive nut butter recalled due to salmonella risk

Walmart shoppers in 19 states are being urged to check their pantries after testing detected salmonella in jars of a retailer-exclusive pistachio spread.

Botticelli Foods is recalling one lot of bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter because it may be contaminated with salmonella, according to an announcement by the Food and Drug Administration on Aug. 3.

The product was sold exclusively at Walmart stores in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Washington, and Wyoming.

No illnesses or injuries have been reported in connection with the recalled product.

The recall covers 6.7-ounce glass jars of bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter with:

  • UPC: 194346207968
  • Lot code: LB028ACP04
  • Expiration date: Jan. 28, 2027

The lot code and expiration date are printed on the jar. No other lots of bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter are included in the recall.

Customers should not eat the recalled product and should return it to the Walmart store where it was purchased for a full refund.

Salmonella found in 3 jars during routine testing

The recall began after Walmart learned on July 17 that the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services had tested three jars collected during a routine inspection at a Walmart store.

All three samples tested positive for salmonella, according to the recall announcement.

More Recalls:

The pistachio butter was manufactured by Gustibus Alimentari Srl in Assoro, Italy, and imported into the United States by New York-based Botticelli Foods.

The FDA notice does not connect this recall to a broader salmonella outbreak, and no illnesses have been associated with the product as of the announcement date.

Walmart introduced bettergoods in 2024 as its largest private-label food launch in roughly two decades.

The line includes hundreds of products positioned around globally inspired foods and plant-based options.

Salmonella infections can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

Symptoms generally begin within several hours to several days after exposure. Most healthy people recover without treatment, but the infection can become severe or fatal in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.

Consumers who ate the recalled pistachio butter and developed symptoms should contact a health care provider.
