Top analyst reveals the gas price that could break Walmart shoppers

Consumers can complain about the economy long before they actually stop spending. Walmart (WMT) is seeing that divide play out in real time.

Jefferies analyst Corey Tarlowe said in a report that despite fuel prices rising above $4 in recent months, Walmart management has not noticed a major shift in customer journeys, basket sizes, or product mix after meeting with executives.

But management reportedly is circling, with red ink, a much more uncomfortable threshold: gasoline around $5 per gallon, as Bloomberg reported.

Walmart views $3-to-$4 gasoline as manageable, $4-to-$5 as creating economic pressure, and $5 as potentially delivering a psychological “shock,” according to Tarlowe.

That distinction is relevant for a company with massive exposure to the American household. Walmart reported revenue of $713 billion for fiscal year 2026, has more than 10,900 stores worldwide, and touches around 280 million customers and members each week.

That’s why Walmart is watching fuel so closely, along with the larger consumer data. In April, the average price for normal gasoline in the U.S. was $4.10 a gallon and $4.48 in May, compared to an average of $2.81 in January, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Consumers are still buying.

The question is how long they can keep tolerating the squeeze.

Walmart has scale most retailers cannot match

Walmart is entering the fuel price shock from a reasonably good operating perch.

Revenue for fiscal first quarter 2027 grew 7.3% at constant currency, and operating income increased 5.9%. In its latest fiscal year, it delivered $713 billion in revenue, showing the significant purchasing leverage Walmart has with suppliers.

That scale is a measure of protection when costs grow.

Walmart’s scale and pricing discipline should allow it to withstand between 50 to 100 basis points of price escalation through sourcing, management believes, Tarlowe said. Higher diesel fuel costs affecting Walmart’s private transportation fleet were also previously factored in to the forecast.

At the same time, Walmart is focusing aggressively on value. The business revealed hundreds of rollbacks throughout Walmart and Sam’s Club in July. It stated pricing on 14 common school supplies was the lowest since 2019 for the back-to-school season.

Those efforts are more valuable when petroleum bites more into household income.

The defensive nature of Walmart is also why it sometimes does well during an economic crunch. Consumers still need groceries and household necessities, and shoppers with more money to spend may “trade down” from more expensive businesses.

$5 gasoline would test the consumer much more seriously

Fuel prices have already dramatically reset.

EIA figures show the average U.S. price of normal gasoline jumped from $2.81 in January to $4.48 in May and then fell to roughly $4.05 in June. Diesel has also been pushed up, which is particularly significant for merchants as items move by truck, pressuring supply systems.

The energy shock is not just at the gas station.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important shipping lanes in the world, with historically about one-fifth of the world’s petroleum liquids consumption transiting the channel. Disruptions earlier this year sent Brent crude above $100 per barrel and caused production shutdowns across areas of the Middle East, EIA said.

Conditions have improved since then; EIA confirmed that July shipping volume through Hormuz was rebounding and warned that increasing oil supply will eventually exert downward pressure on crude and gasoline prices.

That could be relevant for Walmart.

The longer high gas prices linger, the more likely they are to translate consumer angst into actual spending decisions.

Walmart shoppers are still spending, despite weak confidence

The consumer has not fallen apart, according to government data.

Personal-consumption expenditures, in real terms, went up 0.4 percent in June, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reported. Spending in real terms was up 0.3% in May.

Confidence is cautious, though. University of Michigan data showed a preliminary consumer mood reading of 51.0 in August, down 7.6% from July and 12.4% from a year ago.

That combination of increased spending and diminishing confidence appears eerily similar to what Walmart claims it is seeing.

Numbers Walmart investors should watch

  • $5: Gasoline level Walmart reportedly considers a potential consumer shock
  • $4.48: Average U.S. regular gasoline price in May
  • $713 billion: Walmart fiscal 2026 revenue
  • 280 million: Approximate weekly Walmart customers and members globally
  • 7.3%: Q1 FY27 constant-currency revenue growth
  • 51.0: Preliminary August consumer-sentiment reading

For now, Walmart has a strong position: Concerned consumers are still spending, and its discount proposition becomes more appealing when budgets are tighter.

But management’s reported $5 barrier gives investors a clear point to monitor.

Consumers haven’t cracked beneath the weight of pricey gas yet.

If national prices approach $5 and hold there, Walmart might test whether sentiment drives behavior.
