Amazon cargo delivery company files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

At the start of September, the global network of transportation partners that retail giant Amazon relies upon to process an average of between 15 and 17.2 million delivery orders per day was suddenly thrust into public attention.

A cargo plane operated by 21 Air ran off the runway at Miami International in a major accident that killed five people traveling in a van on a nearby road.

Since the Sept. 6 crash, Amazon suspended its operations with 21 Air, pending an ongoing investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The retail platform said it made the choice after it “spent time supporting the investigation and reviewing some of the surrounding circumstances.”

While operating with an unblemished safety record, another of Amazon’s network of thousands of transportation partners ended up in the limelight this week when it filed for Chapter 11 protection in a Florida court, Tampa Bay Business Journal reported.

CLJ Transporting files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Central Florida

Launched out of Winter Haven in Polk County in 2005, CLJ Transporting is a cargo carrier and dedicated Amazon Freight Partner that had been running deliveries for Amazon within a 200-mile radius of Davenport in the central part of the state for more than a decade.

Classified as a midsize regional trucking company, CLJ Transporting last reported a fleet of 18 trucks and 34 employees.

The filing was made in the Florida Middle Bankruptcy Court by attorney David Cruz. Middle District of Florida Subchapter V Trustee Michael C. Markham was appointed as trustee to oversee the case, and the next hearing has been set for Oct. 14.

The trucking company could not be immediately reached for comment on the filing or its situation. Creeping interest costs on several short-term financing agreements were the primary reason behind the deterioration of CLJ’s finances, according to Tampa Bay Business Journal.

The filing indicates the trucking company’s intent to restructure and remain in business.

To run its delivery network, Amazon works with more than 50,000 third-party carriers and trucking companies around the world. It also has a fleet of over 80,000 in-house semi-trucks and branded trailers.

While global shipping demand remains at all-time highs, the trucking industry faces multiple challenges, ranging from rising fuel prices and maintenance costs to the lulls that can occur amid disruptions to global supply operations.

Allbound Carrier, Freight Sherpas Inc., Honey Bee Freight Group LLC, and K&L Trucking LLC are some of the other trucking companies that have filed for Chapter 11 or Chapter 7 protection since the start of 2026.

“Trucking companies operate in a challenging financial environment, where even minor shifts in market conditions can result in major impacts on cash flow and solvency,” bankruptcy attorneys Ford & Semach write on their website.

“Rising insurance premiums, fluctuating fuel prices, maintenance costs, and driver shortages all create significant pressure on profit margins.”
