Dollar Falls to a One-Month Low as Democrats Win Both…

The result initially weighed on the greenback as investors assessed AI regulation and growth risks, while gold rose and the focus moved back to US data.

The dollar fell to a one-month low after Democrats won control of both the House and Senate, ending the 2026 midterms with a divided government for the final two years of Donald Trump’s term. The dollar index slipped around 0.5% to 101.41 in Reuters’ early Wednesday snapshot, while the euro rose 0.4% to $1.1236 and the yen strengthened 0.38% to 158.09 per dollar. Gold moved above $4,000 an ounce as investors reacted to the weaker dollar and lower Treasury yields.

The move was not simply a vote against the dollar. Markets were weighing what a Democratic Congress might mean for AI investment, fiscal policy and the growth outlook. The initial market response leaned defensive: the greenback and Treasury yields fell, gold advanced, and US stock futures dropped as investors considered whether new oversight could slow the data-centre expansion and AI spending that have supported US growth expectations.

AI concerns add a growth channel to the FX reaction

Reuters reported that the prospect of tighter scrutiny of AI and resistance to data-centre projects were among investors’ concerns. The dollar’s fall reflected the possibility that slower AI-related investment could reduce US growth momentum and eventually lower the need for higher interest rates. That is a conditional market interpretation, not a policy change already in force. A divided Congress can obstruct new initiatives, and Trump retains veto power over legislation.

The price action also followed a sharp shift in election expectations as results arrived. Earlier, FXStreet described the move as “US election jitters” weighing on the dollar. Once Democrats’ gains became a confirmed sweep of both chambers, traders had to distinguish the immediate repricing from the longer-term policy consequences. Reuters quoted a strategist who said the election could constrain policy without fundamentally challenging the broader US growth story.

Gold gains while currency pairs reflect a broad dollar move

Gold’s rise above $4,000 put the dollar relationship back in focus. A weaker dollar can make bullion cheaper for buyers using other currencies, while lower Treasury yields reduce the opportunity cost of holding a non-yielding asset. Both factors supported the metal after it had struggled below $4,000 in recent sessions. FinanceFeeds’ latest gold market update tracked the move and the next technical levels.

EUR/USD’s rise to $1.1236 and USD/JPY’s decline to 158.09 showed that the dollar weakened against both the euro and the yen. The yen also benefited from its safe-haven status, while the Swiss franc strengthened. These moves should be read against the broader session: currency levels fluctuate continuously, and the cited figures are Reuters’ reported snapshot rather than a live quote. Further price action will depend on yields, central-bank expectations and incoming US data.

For FX traders, the election’s direct policy effect is still uncertain. A Democratic Congress can use oversight, hearings and control of legislation to challenge parts of the administration’s agenda, but it cannot enact major policy changes without the president’s cooperation or enough votes to overcome a veto. The dollar may therefore be more sensitive to changes in growth and rate expectations than to campaign promises alone.

Friday’s payrolls report is the next scheduled test

The next clear macro catalyst is the US October Employment Situation report, scheduled for Friday, November 6, at 8:30 a.m. ET, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics schedule. Payroll growth, wages and unemployment will help investors assess whether the economy is cooling and how that may affect Federal Reserve policy. A strong report could support yields and the dollar if it revives expectations for tighter policy; a weaker reading could reinforce the market’s growth concerns.

Other risks remain in view. Reuters noted the possibility that renewed conflict in the Middle East could lift oil prices and support the dollar, while central-bank decisions and inflation data could reset rate expectations. The election has supplied a near-term catalyst, but it has not displaced the fundamental drivers of currency markets.

Takeaway: The Democratic sweep pushed the dollar to a one-month low as markets priced AI-related growth risks and lower yields. Whether the move lasts will depend on Friday’s jobs data, Treasury yields and how much policy a divided Washington can actually change.
