57-year-old children’s chain considers Chapter 11, liquidation

The Children’s Place has been on a downward trajectory since closing more than 250 stores in struggling malls back in 2024. At the time, the chain was facing rapidly dwindling cash, and bankruptcy was a possibility, TheStreet reported.

At the time, the chain had very little cash on hand.

“Total liquidity as of Feb. 3, 2024, is expected to be approximately $45 million (including approximately $13 million of cash and cash equivalents and approximately $32 million of excess availability under the company’s credit facility after excluding all necessary reserves and excess availability requirements),” the company shared in its fourth-quarter earnings release.

Now, the company faces a new set of struggles, and Bloomberg reported that the chain is considering a Chapter 11 bankruptcy, a sale, or even a liquidation.

Children’s Place showed signs of struggle

Children’s Place’s second-quarter numbers were not strong.

  • Net sales decreased $56.2 million, or 18.9%, to $241.8 million in the three months ended Aug. 1, 2026, compared to $298 million in the three months ended Aug. 2, 2025.
  • The decrease in net sales was driven by a decrease in direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales of 15.0% due to lower traffic compared to the prior year.
  • Comparable retail sales in its owned and operated DTC business decreased 16.7% for the quarter.

The company also lost money.

“Net loss was $(31.0) million, or $(1.39) per diluted share, in the three months ended August 1, 2026, compared to $(5.4) million, or $(0.24) per diluted share, in the three months ended August 2, 2025,” according to its Q2 earnings press release.

As of Aug. 1, 2026, the Company had $7.2 million in cash and cash equivalents, $47.5 million in borrowing availability under its revolving credit facility, and an additional $25 million of availability under the unsecured Commitment Letter provided by Mithaq, representing total liquidity of $79.7 million.

Despite this bleak position, interim CEO Muhammad Asif Seemab tried to paint a mostly positive picture.

More Bankruptcy:

“During the quarter, we continued to contend with stabilizing our customer file, driving traffic to our stores and websites, and lower conversion, combined with a very clearance-heavy mix,” he said.

“Despite the near-term headwinds, we continue to invest in the long-term strength of the business, focused on our strategic priorities: improving our customer experience, strengthening and elevating the brand, delivering on financial targets, and enhancing organizational leadership,” Seemab added.

Children’s Place is considering all options

Children’s Place did not mention a potential bankruptcy, closure, sale, or liquidation in its earnings release. All of those options, however, appear to be on the table.

“The Children’s Place Inc. is preparing to file for bankruptcy and pursue a sale that could either keep the business operating or result in its liquidation, according to people familiar with the situation. Existing shareholders are expected to be wiped out as part of the restructuring, they added,” Bloomberg reported.

No decision has been made.

“The company is weighing bids from an investor consortium as well as liquidators, said the people, who asked not to be identified, discussing a private matter. The talks, which are ongoing, revolve around the valuation of the bids and may not materialize in a sale,” they told the news organization.

Berkeley Research Group has been hired to advise The Children’s Place on its options.

RTM Nexus CEO Dominick Miserandino thinks the chain faces challenges it may not be able to overcome. “Kids keep growing, so parents always need to buy more clothes,” he told TheStreet.

“Unfortunately for Children’s Place, those parents have plenty of other places to shop. Walmart, Target, Old Navy, and Amazon all make it easy to buy the next size without a separate trip. Children’s Place has been a familiar name for generations of families, but familiarity only gets you so far. At some point, parents have to walk into the store or click the buy button.”

Retail analyst Maurie Backman thinks that the chain has lost its trendiness to some customers.

“A big problem for Children’s Place is that it loses its appeal early. Today’s 9-year-olds don’t want shirts with hearts and smiley faces and ‘girl power’ slogans. It’s a fine store for very young children, but at a certain point, it becomes, as kids today would say, ‘cringe.’ That’s not the sole reason for the company’s fiscal troubles, but it’s a factor,” she shared in a message to TheStreet.
