Bitcoin Price at $82,650 After Hot September CPI: Bull and…

Updated 14 October 2026. Bitcoin traded at $82,651 at 9:08 a.m. ET (CoinGecko), down 0.6 percent on the day, after the US September consumer price index came in hotter than expected. Headline CPI rose to 3.7 percent a year (3.6 percent expected, 3.4 percent in August) and core CPI rose 0.3 percent on the month against a 0.2 percent forecast (BLS data via CoinDesk). Bitcoin dropped about $1,000 on the release. Verdict: the print moves an October Fed hike back into play, which caps rallies until the 28 October decision. Reference levels: $78,000 below, $87,500 above.

Key facts

  • Headline CPI: +0.6 percent month on month (in line with forecasts, up from 0.4 percent in August) and 3.7 percent year on year against 3.6 percent expected (CoinDesk, 14 October). Gasoline prices drove the headline figure (The Crypto Times).
  • Core CPI: +0.3 percent month on month against a 0.2 percent forecast, and 2.6 percent year on year against 2.5 percent expected and 2.4 percent in August. Core strips out food and energy and is the gauge the Fed watches most closely.
  • Bitcoin reaction: from about $83,800 before the release to about $82,800 after it (CoinDesk); $82,651 on CoinGecko at 9:08 a.m. ET.
  • Rates: the 10-year Treasury yield rose 9.3 basis points to 5.308 percent and the 2-year rose 13.1 basis points to 4.924 percent (CoinDesk). Gold fell 1.5 percent to $4,116 an ounce.
  • Fed odds: futures priced about a 22 percent chance of an October hike before the data and around 40 percent shortly after (Reuters via Investing.com); ZeroHedge put the post-release figure near 50 percent. The Fed meets on 27-28 October.
  • ETF flows: US spot bitcoin ETFs lost $681.1 million in the week to 9 October and a further $65.4 million on 12 October, all of it from BlackRock’s IBIT (SoSoValue).

What the print changes

The headline number was close to expectations; the problem was underneath it. Energy explained most of the 0.6 percent monthly rise, as forecasters said it would, but core inflation also beat, at 0.3 percent against 0.2 percent. That is the reading that matters for a Fed that raised rates in September for the first time in more than three years and has since signalled that one more increase may be needed before the end of 2026.

Before Wednesday, markets expected the Fed to hold in October and hike in December. A core beat brings October back into the discussion. Futures odds of an October move roughly doubled within minutes of the release, and two-year yields, which track Fed expectations most closely, rose more than ten-year yields. A 5.3 percent ten-year yield is a high bar for a non-yielding asset: every extra basis point of real return on Treasuries raises the cost of holding bitcoin.

The reaction so far has been orderly. Bitcoin lost about 1.2 percent on the print rather than breaking down, partly because it was already weak. It fell below $82,000 earlier this week as $771 million of leveraged positions were liquidated over two days (CoinGlass data via The Block), and it had been stuck between about $83,000 and $84,000 into the release.

What to watch next

  • 15 October – producer prices: the September PPI is due on Thursday. A second hot reading would harden the case for an October hike.
  • Fed speakers: New York Fed President John Williams said on 13 October that another hike “may be appropriate” this year (Investing.com). Any official who explicitly ties the next move to October would move odds again.
  • ETF flows: IBIT has driven the recent outflows. A turn back to net inflows after the print would show institutional buyers treating the dip as an entry.
  • $81,000: the level bitcoin dipped toward earlier this week, above the 8 October low of $80,329. A daily close below it would open the bear case.

Bitcoin price scenarios

Scenario Level What it needs
Bear $78,000 A hot PPI on 15 October, October hike odds above 50 percent, ETF outflows continuing and a daily close below $81,000. About 5.6 percent below the current price.
Base $81,000-$85,000 PPI in line, the Fed keeps signalling December rather than October, and ETF flows roughly flat. Bitcoin holds the range it has traded in since early October.
Bull $87,500 Fed officials push back on an October move, yields ease from 5.3 percent and spot ETF flows turn positive. A retest of the roughly $87,000 high from earlier in the autumn (TradingKey) is the first step.

Our scenario levels are reference points built from the price action and catalysts above, not forecasts.

Related coverage

Quick take: September CPI was hotter where it counts. Core inflation beat at 0.3 percent, yields jumped and October hike odds roughly doubled. Bitcoin’s dip to about $82,650 is modest, but with ETF outflows still running, the burden is on Thursday’s PPI and on Fed speakers. Above $87,500 the market has looked past the print; below $81,000, $78,000 comes into view.

FAQ

What was the September 2026 CPI?

Headline CPI rose 0.6 percent on the month and 3.7 percent on the year. Core CPI rose 0.3 percent on the month and 2.6 percent on the year. Both annual readings were 0.1 point above forecasts.

Why did bitcoin fall after CPI?

Hotter core inflation raises the chance that the Fed hikes again in October. Treasury yields rose on the release, which makes holding a non-yielding asset such as bitcoin more expensive.

What is the bitcoin price today?

About $82,651 at 9:08 a.m. ET on 14 October 2026 (CoinGecko), down about $1,000 from its level before the 8:30 a.m. release.

Will the Fed raise rates in October 2026?

It is not the base case, but it is now a real possibility. Futures odds rose from about 22 percent to between 40 and 50 percent after the release, depending on the source and the time measured. The decision is on 28 October.

What could push bitcoin down to $78,000?

A hot PPI report on 15 October, hawkish Fed comments pointing to October and continued spot ETF outflows, with a daily close below $81,000 as the trigger.

What could push bitcoin back to $87,500?

Fed officials pushing back on an October hike, lower Treasury yields and a return to net inflows into spot bitcoin ETFs.
