Starbucks brings back 23-year-old fan favorite with new menu

Starbucks has made a major change across its menu, and it comes at a pivotal moment for the coffee giant.

The coffee chain is bringing back its most popular 23-year-old seasonal beverage, along with several returning favorites and a slate of new drinks and food items as it continues an effort to rebuild customer traffic and strengthen its brand.

Timing is significant. After a period of declining sales, weaker traffic, and store closures, Starbucks is increasingly relying on product innovation and seasonal launches to bring customers back.

Starbucks’ new strategy to reverse declines

The seasonal returning and new menu items are part of Starbucks’ “Back to Starbucks” strategy, which aims to strengthen its brand identity, simplify operations, and improve customer experience.

According to the company, the plan focuses on:

  • Modernizing beverages and food
  • Simplifying the menu to reduce friction and improve speed
  • Enhancing store design and operational efficiency
  • Prioritizing coffee quality
  • Empowering baristas

Starbucks has also streamlined its menu, reduced customization complexity, and eliminated extra charges for milk alternatives.

In early 2025, the company discontinued nine Frappuccino options, along with other beverages and food items, significantly narrowing its menu.

Limited-time products create urgency around a specific launch. Starbucks has repeatedly used that strategy, with some seasonal items becoming cultural moments that generate significant attention and traffic.

The company saw that with the Unicorn Frappuccino.

Starbucks originally launched the Unicorn Frappuccino in 2017 as a limited-time offering, featuring a mango crème base, sour blue drizzle, and whipped cream and sprinkles. The drink quickly became a social media phenomenon before disappearing from the menu.

Nearly 10 years later, Starbucks brought back the Unicorn Frappuccino during the two weekends of the 2026 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Following the festival test and marketing campaign, the company rereleased the beverage for one weekend on Aug. 15. Starbucks said it sold more than 2 million beverages across its North America stores during the promotion.

Independent foot-traffic data from Placer.ai also showed a significant response. Starbucks’ latest Unicorn Frappuccino return drove launch-day visits 44.3% above the chain’s 2026 daily average.

That made it Starbucks’ biggest Saturday sales day on record, with traffic exceeding the Bearista launch day by 4.5%.

The Bearista release in November 2025 generated a 37.8% increase in visits compared with Starbucks’ 12-month daily average, according to Placer.ai. The company said traffic also remained elevated following the launch.

Starbucks sees early signs of a business turnaround

The recent product launches come as Starbucks reports several improvements in its business.

During the third quarter of fiscal 2026, the company reported:

  • North America revenue grew 7% year over year.
  • North America comparable store sales increased 8.1%.
  • North America comparable transactions climbed 4.5%.
  • North America average ticket rose 3.5%.
  • Starbucks reached 35.8 million 90-day active U.S. members.

“Our operational discipline and cost savings work are making us a more focused, nimble company that prioritizes better, spends smarter, and invests with intent,” Starbucks CEO Brian R. Niccol said during the company’s latest earnings call.

“We’re now seeing the benefits of that work, and as our revenues grow, more is flowing through to earnings.”

Niccol also said Starbucks remains ahead of schedule in achieving its turnaround plan, while pointing to marketing and innovation as contributors to the company’s recent resilience.

Independent foot-traffic data also points to an improvement.

After an average 0.6% decline during the first half of 2025, Starbucks’ monthly visits jumped 1.6% in the first five months of the second half, according to Placer.ai.

That compares with a 2.9% year-over-year decline in visits during the fourth quarter of 2024.

Placer.ai CMO and industry expert Ethan Chernofsky said Starbucks continues to have an advantage in generating excitement around limited-time offerings and seasonal launches.

“The new strategy sounded exciting, there’s real evidence that it’s working, and the chain has maintained its unique hold on the calendar and an industry-leading ability to drive urgency and visits almost at the flick of a switch,” said Chernofsky.

“[We have] lots of reasons to expect the Starbucks recovery to continue gaining momentum.”

The data provide early evidence that Starbucks’ turnaround efforts are translating into stronger customer activity, although the company still has work to do to sustain that momentum.

What this means for Starbucks customers

For customers, the Starbucks 2026 fall menu represents a combination of familiar seasonal products and new additions.

The strategy reflects Starbucks’ broader effort to simplify its menu while maintaining the seasonal launches that have historically generated significant attention.

Here’s some of my previous coverage on more Starbucks menu launches:

Returning favorites give customers access to products they already know, while the new beverages and food items expand the choices available during the fall promotion.

Whether the latest lineup can sustain the traffic gains Starbucks has recently reported remains to be seen. But the company’s recent results suggest that seasonal products and marketing are becoming an increasingly important part of its effort to reconnect with customers.

“We’ll keep driving fandom with a steady pace of buzz-worthy merch launches and continued innovation season after season,” said Niccol.
